What is an arepa? The short answer: it’s delicious. The long answer: it is a gluten-free, grilled bread from Venezuela…light, soft, and just chewy enough to make the perfect little sandwich pocket.
Artichoke is delighted to welcome Ruth Zanoni into our demonstration kitchen for an evening of authentic recipes and techniques. Ruth is an accomplished home cook and an internationally experienced teacher; she has just returned to Cincinnati after leading private classes in Malaysia. We at Artichoke are eager to highlight her talent. Ruth will show a select group of students how to mix the arepa dough, grill the bread, and then stuff and serve the sandwiches. Students will learn how to prepare Ruth’s own modern adaptations of traditional fillings – both vegetarian and meat. Our guests will enjoy a selection of classic accompaniments that will round out the evening’s menu.
Recipe demonstrations of “La Cocina Venezolana” include:
• Arepa venezolana
• Carne mechada (shredded beef filling, prepared in the pressure cooker)
• Perico (Venezuelan scrambled eggs)
Venezuelan tastings also include:
• Assorted toppings – avocados, farmer’s cheese, hot sauces
• Batido de lechosa – blended fresh papaya drink
This special class will last about 90 minutes. As with all events in the Artichoke demonstration kitchen, you are welcome to bring your own favorite bottles, and we will provide bottle openers and glasses for all of our guests. Ruth suggests light wines, such as Pinor Noir, to accompany her recipes. Reservations for the class must be made in advance and are available at $35.00 per person. To guarantee your spot for the evening, either visit our store at historic Findlay Market or call us during our regular business hours. Participation is limited to 15 students.
